How To Own

by Craig DeGroot
(Ontario)

I currently do not own a home, but am working and saving money for my first income property/home. We're thinking of a duplex, triplex, or possibly a home with a basement suite where we would live in one of the units for a few years before buying another home for ourselves (3 year plan). Just wondering what is the best way to structure ownership of rental properties in general, and this type of arrangement in particular. Should I own the home personally, set up a holding company of some sort? How do you own most of your investment properties?

An accountant is best suited for this question. We would recommend doing it personally as long as you have very good insurance but again, I would consult with a good real estate accountant who knows your goals and situation.
